Divers have captured footage of frogfish in the Philippines engaged in what appears to be competitive mating.
The stunning footage was released by Atmosphere Resorts & Spa Philippines and was taken in the waters off Dauin near Dumaguete.
The footage shows three frogfish engaged in what appears to be a competitive mating dance, filmed by returning guest Joel Bergsma while diving with divemaster Arjay.
What makes the footage so unique is that it shows behavior rarely observed, even by experienced guides, diving the area day in and day out.
The Dumaguete area of Negros Oriental is widely regarded as a global hotspot for frogfish. In this region, frogfish may breed year-round depending on water temperature, food supply and female readiness. However, encounters with mating activity remain uncommon because frogfish are typically solitary and fiercely territorial.
The video highlights why Dauin remains a magnet for underwater photographers and marine enthusiasts. The region’s combination of healthy reefs, expert guides and frequent frogfish sightings makes it one of the Philippines’ most popular dive destinations.
