Marine conservation charity Fathoms Free has been honored with the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS).
The award is the highest honor that an organization can receive in the UK. It honors the charity’s work to combat the scourge of abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) in local waters around the UK.
Fathoms Free will formally receive its award from the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Sir Edward Bolitho KCVO OBE, at a ceremony later this year. In addition, the organization, alongside other award recipients, will attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in the summer of 2026.
ALDFG, which is otherwise known as “ghost gear,” poses a massive threat to marine life. The gear, which is often discarded after it loses its purpose, remains dangerous to marine life, and a wide range of animals perish when they become entangled in the gear.
Commenting on the award, Luke Bullus, Trustee and Diving Officer at Fathoms Free, stated:
“This award is a huge honor for everyone involved with Fathoms Free. Our volunteers give their time, skills, and energy to protect the marine environment, and this recognition shines a light on their dedication. Stingray in particular has transformed what we can achieve, and this award belongs to everyone who has helped make that possible.”
