The Historical Diving Society USA announced the appointment of Cathryn Castle Garcia as the new executive editor of the Journal of Diving History. She is set to replace founding publisher Leslie Leaney.

While Leaney is stepping down as executive editor, he will remain on board as the magazine’s Publisher. Issue 126 of the Journal will be the first produced by Castle Garcia and Art Director Doreen Hann.

Commenting on the new appointment, Leaney stated:

“The Journal is now in its 33rd year of uninterrupted publication, which is quite a feat for a small non-profit, considering how may publications the industry lost during Covid. It may now be the longest consistently published magazine in the industry, and it is now time for me to step aside and welcome a new editor. I am thrilled that my long-time friend and dive publishing professional Cathryn Castle Garcia has joined the Journal team to take over the Executive Editor position. Their first Journal issue looks terrific.”

While Castle Garcia commented on her new appointment:

“I am humbled and honored to stand alongside with my dear friend and Journal founder Leslie Leaney as I join the HDS USA team. The HDS USA and the Journal are doing important work, and I am happy to be a part of it. I’m especially pleased to be collaborating with art director Doreen Hann once again. Our names have appeared together for decades, on the mastheads of Dive Training, Dive Center Business, and California Diving News magazines.”
