Yet again, the World Heritage Committee, part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is demanding that the Mexican government step up and help protect Vaquitas from extinction.
These tiny marine mammals, which reach around 4.5ft/1.4m, are being devasted in Mexican waters due to the use of Gillnets. Although these nets were banned in 2020, and some enforcement has been accompanied by reduced usage in the zero-tolerance zones, they remain widespread outside these. As a result, they keep killing the innocent Vaquitas.
The World Heritage Committee states that Mexico needs to massively enforce Vaquita protections in its water to have a chance of saving these endangered marine mammals.
You can help by adding your voice to tell the Mexican Government to enforce the removal of gillnets here.
