Bayahibe, Dominican Republic – October 8, 2002 -??Audrey Mestre’s no-limits world record campaign is in an unusual state for an enterprise of this level of complexity and daring – relaxed, organized and??ahead of schedule.?? I ran into Pipin and Audrey on the way to dinner at the Viva Dominicus resort, and learned that Audrey’s train-up had been essentially completed the previous Friday, October 4, when she easily completed a dive to 166 meters / 544 feet.?? ??As the record attempt is scheduled for Saturday, October 12, the campaign has decided to throttle back and spend this week relaxing.
[“A_Mestre_WR_Training” right]IAFD President Carlos Serra indicated that there may be another deep training dive on Wednesday, October 9, but assured me that?? “Audrey and the team have worked hard and achieved all of the training objectives.?? There is nothing to be gained by continuing.?? All we have to do at this point is maintain ourselves at this peak.”
The struggle for the absolute depth record in freediving has of late become focused on three women: Audrey Mestre, Tanya Streeter and Mandy-Rae Cruickshank.
Asked what the target depth would be on event day, Pipin and Audrey smiled mysteriously?? and suggested that this datum would become known at the appropriate time. Stay tuned.
