The Divers Alert Network recently hosted its third Academy of Dive Medicine program in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The event was held last month at a submarine school at a Brazilian Navy base.

The five-day program featured eight DAN experts in dive medicine and safety, and covered a wide array of topics including:

  • Underwater Physiology.
  • Decompression illness and its remote, pre-hospital and definitive clinical management.
  • Case studies.
  • Hazardous marine life.
  • Hyperbaric facility emergency action planning, and risk management.

DAN Medical Coordinator and an instructor at the academy Camilo Saraiva stated:

“We have a successful partnership with the Brazilian Navy, using their facilities and hosting several attendees from their very experienced medical staff.”

One of the presenters, DAN Director of Medical Services and Programs Matias Nochetto stated:

“Presenting these topics to this audience is huge. There is almost no hyperbaric medicine literature in languages other than English, and there are no training programs like this one. Being able to cover technical topics such as hyperbaric technology and safety in the participants’ native language is crucial to developing solid foundational knowledge.”

DAN aims to further its medical training in languages other than English, and in addition to Brazil has held Academy of Dive Medicine programs in Chile and Colombia. DAN is already planning its 2019 program.
