NOAA Announces Formal Partnership With Recreational Boating, Fishing Industry

-

Given that responsible recreational boating provides access to a bunch of sites in U.S. marine sanctuaries for scuba divers and other water enthusiasts to enjoy, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently announced it had entered into a formal partnership with leading recreational fishing and boating organizations to promote sustainable activities in federal waters, including sanctuaries.

Those who signed the formal agreement include: NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, NOAA Fisheries, the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the American Sportfishing Association, the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, and the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation.

John Armor, director of NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, said:

“Public support through partnerships is critical to effective protection, sustainable use, and enjoyment of the nation’s marine environment. This agreement will help ensure that sustainable recreational fishing and boating continue to benefit coastal communities and enrich the lives of millions of Americans.”

Recreation and tourism throughout the U.S. marine sanctuary system generates about $8 billion per year that goes directly to local economies, according to NOAA.
