Miami, FL – The formation of a new educational coalition was announced exclusively at DEMA today by Lawrence Groth, President of Great White Adventures and Eli Martinez, Editor-in-Chief of Shark Diver Magazine. The International Association of Shark Diving Operators, IASDO, will be a non-profit organization that focuses on educating divers, the general public and especially the media on the truths of one of the seas most mysterious creatures: sharks. The coalition’s founding members are Great White Adventures, the number one Great White Shark diving company in America and Shark Diver Magazine, the print source for shark diving adventures. Charter members of the coalition also include the Shark Research Institute, Jim Abernathy’s Scuba Adventures, Inc. and the Institute of Marine Sciences at UC Santa Cruz. “Conservation, preservation, education and recreation are the principal ideas that we will promote in our new coalition for sharks,” said Groth. “We will work collectively to correct misconceptions about sharks, provide valuable research and insight into their behavior, and demonstrate how we as divers, shark lovers and scientists can protect & enjoy these magnificent creatures, while simultaneously preserving and honoring the oceans they inhabit.” IASDO will also focus on developing the highest standards and criteria for operating within the coalition’s by-laws. Their goal is to create a self-regulating system within the shark diving industry; to keep safety, sustainability and conservation as their most important priorities.
The International Association of Shark Diving Operators will be appearing in force at DEMA 2004, with strategic plans to take over a specific section of the show creating a groundbreaking “shark alley” for attendees of next year’s show.
