“Air travelers arriving in Italy are to be disinfected as soon as they leave their planes in a move to combat the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.

Officials in northern Italy announced the precautionary measures would start on Friday at airports in Venice and Treviso.

In the Emilia Romagna region, all livestock fairs, markets and shows have been canceled until April 15.

Italy has not been hit by the livestock disease which has taken hold in the UK. The country is pushing the European Union to ban the movement of livestock across European borders.

The agriculture minister has said Italy may close its borders to livestock if the EU doesn’t impose a ban.
