This weekend Ricardo Paris, Grove Scuba and Vortex Freediving will host the fourth edition of the South Florida Apnea Challenge. It will take place at the FIU Biscayne Bay Aquatic Centre in Miami. The event will bring together 16 athletes from 4 countries, including current and former national record holders Beatrix Paris, Antonio Del Duca and Karla Mendez.
This event also brings together a highly experienced safety team and judges, with some of US Freediving’s most prominent names like Robert King, Dr. John Shedd and DeeperBlue.com Editor-at-Large Francesca Koe amongst them.
The action kicks off at 10 am Saturday with Static (STA) followed by Dynamic No Fins (DNF) from 1 pm the same afternoon. Sunday will see the athletes return to action for Dynamic with Fins (DYN) with some big dives expected from both the men and the women!
SFAC prides itself on being a friendly event suitable for both newcomers and seasoned competitors, with short and long courses setups for the DNF/DYN disciplines. It is an AIDA and USAF recognized event, suitable for chasing a national ranking, posting a personal best or even qualifying for your national team.
Organizer Ricardo Paris had this to say:
“Its always an honor to host our annual South Florida Apnea Challenge. Freediving teaches us a tremendous amount about ourselves- about our minds and our potential. It is my wish that everyone will relax, have fun and learn at SFAC 2018.”
Prize giving will be from 2 pm with some great prizes up for grabs, including top of the line custom Alchemy v3 carbon fins for the overall winners, Oceaner wetsuits, Omer/Umberto Pelizzari branded merchandise, SEAC masks and snorkels, Prawno apparel, Waterlust bottles, Stream2Sea sun care products, Born of Water apparel and “El Apneista” books from Antonio Del Duca of Freedive Gravedad Cero.
