Hannah Stacey, a 26 year old UK Freediver (from Cornwall) broke 2 records at the weekend in Spetses, Greece. The 5 foot 4 inch, 50 kilo diver broke the UK Men’s record for Free Immersion. She exceeded the previous level set by Marcus Greatwood this year at 41 metres by a full 4 metres to achieve a depth of 45 metres on a single breath unassisted by any fins.
The day before she broke the 45 metre UK women’s constant weight freedive by descending to 50 metres on a single breath.
Hannah says, ‘Wave conditions were challenging for an attempt as a wind blew up in the afternoon but we decided to go ahead as my training dives had all been strong and my safety team were brilliant.’
Two judges from the international freediving organisation AIDA ( Association Internationale pour le Development de L’Apnee) were on hand to verify her records.
Hannah says, " I’m delighted, my ambition is to continue to compete at the same level as British men in this demanding sport while working to a more focussed training regime in and out of the water.’ Hannah lives in Porthleven in Cornwall and adds, ‘Of course I’d like to go further in a sport where you get to spend a lot of time in bikinis on boats with attractive fit young men, who wouldn’t?’
The attempts took place off the island of Spetses on the set of the movie The Freediver which is shooting there now starring Camilla Rutherford (Gosford Park, Vanity Fair etc) and James Fox (Sexy Beast, Patriot Games etc). Hannah acted as Camilla’s stunt double in the film, currently being shot on location in Greece. The director is Alki Davids, founder of Full On Entertainment, the company behind The Freediver.
