The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has announced the release of a “story map” to illustrate the effects of vessel noise on marine wildlife inside sanctuaries.
The map is part of the SanctSound project. The four-year project is designed to improve our understanding of the underwater soundscape within national marine sanctuaries.
SanctSound runs from 2018 to the spring of 2022 and is managed by the US Navy and NOAA. The project undertakes monitoring activities in seven national marine sanctuaries and one marine national monument, including:
- Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
- Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
- Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.
- Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
- Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary.
- Grey’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.
- Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.
- Papahanaumoku Marine National Monument.
