A United Kingdom parliamentary petition has been launched to stop the mislabelling of sharks in the country.
Currently, the Department of Food and Rural Affairs’ Commercial Designations of Fish allows for up to 46 species of sharks, including various critically endangered ones, to be marketed under generic names like “rock salmon.”
The petition wants this commercial designation anomaly banned, and that fish be labeled by their common names.
This will allow consumers to make ethical choices when visiting fish and chips shops. Examples of endangered species of shark sold under the “Rock Salmon” designation include the critically endangered tope shark and spiny dogfish, which is vulnerable to extinction globally.
