Your Name: Steve Truglia
Accomplishments in freediving: Well, I am currently the deepest British Freediver with a 62m No-Limits. I also have done 35m Constant Weight and 5:23 Static – I intend to do 100m+ in No-Limits before September and also 50m Constant Weight.
How often do you train? About 5 times a week, sometimes more.
What is a typical day for you in your training routine – without divulging any special techniques that you don’t feel comfortable revealing: Typically I do pool sessions 4 times a week, split between static and dynamic. Then I do a little bit of gym, lots of running and 2 hours of yoga a week.
Do you have any special dietary needs or preferences that you feel helps your training? Do you have any recommendations regarding this topic? <laughing> Well, apart from my love of a huge fried breakfast!! I’m starting to experiment and investigate more, but no set regime yet! I’m seeking the advice of more experienced freedivers like Loic LeFerme and Fred Buyle.
Where do you mainly train – i.e.; pool, open water, etc. Weekly training is in the pool, with around 10 days per month of open water training.
What is your favorite discipline in the sport of freediving? No-limits because I love the feeling!
What is the most memorable dive or attempt that you have had – positive or negative: It has to be my first 35m variable weight I ever did, there was a huge connection that I felt and knew that I had to move into No-Limits. The connection was very powerful, unlike anything I’ve every experienced before in any other sport.
What advice would you give to someone who might be interested in the sport of freediving? Get on a course, no – in fact a really good course! Freediving is a very safe sport if it done properly, but you need to seek advice from more experienced freedivers. I’ve had a tremendous amount of help from Loic LeFerme and the freedivers based out of Nice, France.
What do you do outside of the sport? My day job is as a stunt performer, I’ve worked on James Bond movies and Saving Private Ryan to name a couple. I also am a professional musician and play in various venues around the UK when I’m not working on movies (which is most of the year)
