Less than two weeks into their crowdfunding campaign to get a spearfishing how-to guide published, Australian spearos Levi “Turbo” Brown and Isaac “Shrek” Daly are already over 90 percent funded.
Brisbane-based writer/podcasters Shrek and Turbo wrote “99 Tips to Get Better at Spearfishing” from more than 50 interviews with spearfishing experts and authorities from around the world. The pair say the book is full of actionable information to help people get better at spearfishing.
Brown said:
“Good spearfishing skills and knowledge take years of experience to acquire. We’ve spent over a year creating a practical guide that gives people actionable information to improve their spearfishing.”
Brown co-hosts the Noob Spearo Spearfishing Podcast alongside Daly in Brisbane.
Daly says:
“Spearfishing is not a huge sport but the people that do it are crazy about it. We’ve had more than 175,000 downloads of our interviews. It’s kind of mind-boggling but it’s a privilege to share information and stories that save lives, grow awareness and create a connected spearfishing community.”
According to Brown, spearos need to learn breath-hold techniques, fish hunting techniques, equipment, shark behavior, safe diving practices and even etiquette:
“Our guide is broken down into chapters that address specific areas of difficulty, for example shore dive spearfishing and spearfishing hunting techniques. While it’s not a comprehensive guide, it’s got a lot in there for anyone in their first several years of spearfishing.”
Their Kickstarter campaign began March 10th and aims to raise AUS$5000/US$3850/~3121 Euros or more in 30 days. The pair hope to finance an initial print run so they can share their message with the broader spearfishing community.
Levi said of the results so far:
“The Kickstarter campaign has blown me and Shrek’s minds. We are trying to fast track some extra rewards for backers. Our community have been amazing. Its frigging awesome.”
Daly said:
“We are going to set a stretch goal, I think. We have something else that’s nearly ready and we would love to make this extra special for our backers and community. We’ll hopefully get it organized in the next two weeks.”
