Capt. Helmkamp speaks on US Navy Diving and Salvage

In the Special Interest Track of the DEMA Sponsored Programs, Captain Mark Helmkamp, the US Navy Supervisor of Diving, spoke about the USN Diving and Salvage Program.

“You don’t build a firehouse on the day of the fire”, remarked Helmkamp, when addressing the importance of training in the Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit Two(MDSU2). MDSU2 was key in the recovery the Space Shuttle Challenger as well as TWA flight 800, from which every victim and 98% of the aircraft was recovered.

MDSU2 was also deployed to recover the f/v Ehime Maru, aboard which nine people, including four teenage students, were lost after a collision with USS Greeneville in February 2001.
