There are reports of a minke whale that ran aground deep inside the Brazilian jungle recently after apparently getting lost and traveling 994 miles upriver from the Atlantic Ocean. The report says that the whale weighed some 12 tons, and got trapped on a sandbar on the Amazon River.
Efforts of local residents and biologists helped to free the whale which quickly disappeared afterwards.
One biologist said the animal likely became separated from a group of other whales and mistakenly began swimming upstream rather than remain in the Atlantic, and also say that the animal may have been there a couple of months.
