World Record Freediver to be immortalised on postage stamp

TanyaStreeterHeadshot In a unique precedent setting action, the postal service of the Turks & Caicos has chosen to place the likeness of World Record Freediver Tanya Streeter on a set of 5 postage stamps.

The stamps celebrate Streeter’s outstanding achievements in freediving, where she has demonstrated that she can compete and break world records set by men. The 29-year-old Streeter, who has dual citizenship with the United States and The United Kingdom, is the only living athlete to be honored in this way.

Turks and Caicos are a British colony in the Carribean and generally follows the convention that no living persons except British Royalty may be featured on postage stamps.

The only other women to appear on stamps issued by Turks and Caicos are the Virgin Mary, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother. Tanya’s acceptance into this elite group of history making women demonstrates the unique nature of this honor.
