Culver City, CA — Calling all competitors: Ben Weiss and DeeDee Flores welcome all comers at the first annual Los Angeles Apnea Challenge. Taking place in just over a week, October 1st through October 3rd, this inaugural freediving competition already has a growing line-up of impressive athletes.
Tony Babowicz of Florida, will be be competing, as will Kevin Busscher. Kevin holds a USA Masters title with 131 meters in the dynamic apnea no-fins category. Babowicz — a training partner of Kiwi favorite Niki Roderick — is the current USA record holder for DNF with 139 meters under his belt. There is every expectation that Tony will gain more ground at this competition. As one of the event organizers, Ben Weiss is also a top contender boasting a (training) personal best of 7:06 in static apnea, as well as having represented the United States this year at the World Championships in Okinawa; Weiss performed solidly across all disciplines. As for the ladies, Carla Hanson, a past participant at Vertical Blue, will also be competing.
The Los Angeles Apnea Challenge will consist of three-pool-disciplines inclduing Static Apnea, Dynamic Apnea, and Dynamic Without Fins. The event will take place at the Culver City Pool on Overland Avenue, which has a 25-yard short course for DNF, and a 50m long course for DYN. The competition will be officiated by AIDA judges Grant Graves and Linden Wolbert.
