19,000-plus Lionfish Taken Out During Recent Tournament

A recent Lionfish tournament off the Gulf Coast of Florida saw more than 19,000 of the invasive species caught and sent to market.

From May 16th to May 19th, the Emerald Coast Open saw 43 teams of divers remove 14,119 Lionfish during the actual two-day competition, with the remaining 5,048 caught in the run-up to the tournament.

The team winner, Florida Man, caught 2,241 Lionfish and walked away with a US$10,000 (~8,954 Euro) prize.
